Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Distributes Collection of 71 Font Files

[Asia Economy Reporter Jonggil Lee] The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Korea Copyright Commission, and the Korea Culture Information Service Agency announced on the 30th that they will distribute a collection of seventy-one font files called ‘Safe Font Files,’ which anyone can freely use. The collection consists of forty-one fonts developed by the government, local governments, and public institutions, and thirty fonts developed by private companies. They can be downloaded from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Copyright Commission’s Gonggam Madang, as well as the Korea Culture Information Service Agency’s Gonggong Nuri.

‘Safe Font Files’ may be redistributed to others or used for commercial purposes without issue. However, if they are copied and distributed for profit, permission from the copyright holder must be obtained. Font files are protected under copyright law as ‘computer program works.’ Even if font files are obtained for free, depending on how or for what purpose they are used, permission from the copyright holder may be required. ‘Safe Font Files’ guarantee free use through the Korea Copyright Commission and the Korea Culture Information Service Agency, reducing such inconveniences.
