Busan Haeundae Designated as 'International Conference Complex District' ... Expected Synergy with MICE Industry

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jonghyo] Busan City announced on the 30th that the Haeundae area has been designated as an 'International Conference Complex District.'

The International Conference Complex District designation project, led by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, is promoted to enhance the conditions for attracting and hosting international conferences through the complexification, agglomeration, and interconnection of international conference-related facilities, and to foster Busan as a 'global international conference city.'

The Haeundae International Conference Complex District covers an area of 2.39 million square meters, including BEXCO, Nurimaru APEC House, and the Haeundae luxury hotel district.

Busan City received favorable reviews from the judging panel for successfully hosting large-scale international conferences such as the '2005 APEC Summit,' the '2012 Lions Clubs International Convention in Busan,' and the '2019 Korea-ASEAN Special Summit,' as well as for marketing that highlighted future connectivity and ripple effects of marine leisure, performance, and tourism shopping industries.

With this designation approval, Busan City can now benefit from legal fee reductions and relaxed floor area ratio regulations for specialized conference facilities and agglomerated facilities within the district. Additionally, over the next four years, the city will receive approximately 400 million KRW annually in national funding, which will be matched with city funds to promote activation projects such as MICE shuttles, MICE concierge services, and app advancement, maximizing synergy effects with related facilities and industries.

Oh Keo-don, Mayor of Busan, stated, "To maximize synergy effects through close cooperation with related industries such as international conferences, tourism, shopping, culture, and marine leisure, we will work closely with the Busan Tourism Organization, BEXCO, local businesses, and academia to establish a truly representative marine leisure international conference complex district in Korea."
