[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] In Spain, where the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is raging alongside Italy in Europe, the number of deaths increased by more than 800 in a single day, marking the largest increase ever recorded. The number of confirmed cases is also approaching 80,000.

According to foreign media such as CNN, on the 29th (local time), the Spanish Ministry of Health reported that the cumulative number of COVID-19 deaths nationwide reached 6,528, an increase of 838 from the previous day. This is the first time that the daily death toll from COVID-19 in Spain has exceeded 800. Spain's COVID-19 death toll has already surpassed China's (3,304), making it the second highest in the world after Italy (10,023).

The number of confirmed cases also surged. On that day, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Spain was 78,797, an increase of 6,549 from the previous day. As the spread shows no signs of slowing down, the Spanish government extended the national state of emergency, originally scheduled to end that day, until April 12. In Madrid, the capital where the COVID-19 situation is most severe, large convention centers and hotels have been converted into temporary hospitals to accommodate patients.

Due to the rapidly increasing number of patients, Spain's entire healthcare system is already considered to be at its limit. The demand for intensive care beds nationwide has reportedly exceeded the capacity limit of 4,404 beds for critically ill patients.
