[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who tested positive for the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) and is currently isolated at his residence, appealed to the public through a national letter, stating that the COVID-19 situation will worsen and urging all citizens to recognize the emergency and strictly follow physical distancing guidelines.
According to the UK BBC on the 29th (local time), Prime Minister Johnson said in the national letter, "We know the situation will get worse before it gets better," and emphasized, "In this national emergency, you must stay at home and strictly observe physical distancing rules with others," adding, "The better you follow the rules, the fewer lives will be lost, and the sooner we will return to normal life."
He continued, "The government will do everything possible to ensure that your livelihoods are not affected and that you can properly put food on your tables." Prime Minister Johnson's national letter is scheduled to be delivered to 30 million households across the UK.
As of now, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the UK is 17,089, with 1,019 deaths. Earlier, Prime Minister Johnson and UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock tested positive for COVID-19 on the 27th and entered self-isolation. Johnson, who is reported to have relatively mild symptoms, is known to be leading the COVID-19 response by chairing online video meetings from his residence.
