According to Johns Hopkins University, as of 8:30 PM on the 28th (Eastern Time, US), there are 121,117 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 2,147 deaths in the United States. Following the previous day when the number of cases exceeded 100,000, the count increased by 20,000 in just one day, reaching the 120,000 range.
The number of COVID-19 deaths doubled in just two days. It took one month from February 29, when the first death was reported in Washington State, to reach 1,000 deaths, but it only took two days for the number to double thereafter.
On the 26th, the United States surpassed China and Italy to become the country with the highest number of COVID-19 cases worldwide. In New York State, the largest outbreak area, the number of cases surged by more than 7,000 in one day, reaching 52,318. The death toll also rose sharply by 222 from the previous day, totaling 728.
COVID-19 cases are spreading widely not only in densely populated coastal cities such as New York and Los Angeles (LA) on the East and West Coasts but also inland areas including Detroit in Michigan, Memphis in Tennessee, Milwaukee in Wisconsin, and Pine Bluff in Arkansas. In Chicago, an infant who tested positive for COVID-19 also died.
