Homewear Sales Surge Amid Reduced Outings
Last Year's Ongoing Newtro Trend Shows Strong Momentum
[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] This spring's fashion trend is so-called ‘Home-tro’ (Homewear + Newtro). As the COVID-19 issue prolongs, outings have decreased, and people tend to prefer comfortable-to-wear products. In addition, the Newtro (a new interpretation of retro) trend, which has been popular since last year, is showing strong momentum.
Domestic online marketplace Auction announced on the 29th that sales of items related to ‘homewear’ and ‘Newtro’ significantly increased when comparing the sales volume in the men’s and women’s fashion categories from March 1 to 26 this year with the same period last year.
Homewear includes ‘easywear’ that can be comfortably worn indoors and is also suitable for light outings. By gender, among women, leggings sales increased by 116% compared to the previous year, more than doubling alongside the enthusiasm for home training. Training pants (103%), cardigans (50%), and loose-fit T-shirts (82%) were also popular. Among men, training suit sets (100%) and casual pants (35%) were preferred, and short-sleeve T-shirts sold 47% more.
For both men and women, sales of hooded clothing, suitable for brief outdoor outings, increased significantly. Among women, hooded cardigans grew by 189%, hooded T-shirts and hooded zip-ups recorded sales growth rates of 111% and 128%, respectively. Among men, sales of hooded T-shirts and hooded zip-ups increased by 402% and 20%, respectively.
Newtro (a new interpretation of retro) fashion has been a continuing trend since last year, and related items remain highly popular. Among women, denim shirts increased by 64%, and wide pants, a representative retro item, rose by 103%. Vests also sold 22% more. Lace and chiffon blouses (101%) and chiffon and lace dresses (113%), which are good for creating a retro feel, more than doubled in sales.
Men’s fashion showed similar trends. Denim pants increased by 141% during the same period, and corduroy pants rose by 37%. Vests, which can be easily matched, increased by 28%. Jackets and blazers that enhance shoulder volume also increased by 96%.
