Global COVID-19 Cases Surpass 600,000... [Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] The number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) worldwide has surpassed 600,000.


According to Johns Hopkins University in the United States, as of 5:26 PM (Korean time) on the 28th, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide was recorded at 601,478. The cumulative death toll reached 27,862.


By country, the United States had the highest number with 104,837 cases, followed by Italy with 86,498 cases. The number of patients in these two countries has surpassed that of China, the 'origin country,' which recorded 81,948 cases. Next were Spain (65,719), Germany (53,340), France (33,414), and Iran (32,332) in order of confirmed cases.


In terms of deaths, Italy became the country with the highest number, with 9,134 deaths, followed by Spain with 5,138 deaths.


The numbers of confirmed cases and deaths have been rapidly increasing recently, mainly in Europe and the United States.


According to Johns Hopkins University's global COVID-19 status data, as of the 27th local time in the United States, more than 63,700 new confirmed cases occurred worldwide, surpassing the previous day's record of over 61,900 cases.


In the United States alone, about 20,000 new confirmed cases were reported in a single day, and after surpassing 10,000 confirmed cases on the 19th, the number increased more than tenfold in just eight days.


In Italy, 969 additional deaths were reported in one day, marking the highest daily death toll on record.
