Jeonnam Police Establish Special Investigation Unit for 'Digital Sex Crimes'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Recently, there has been a nationwide public outcry demanding strict investigations and the disclosure of personal information of suspects and participants related to the ‘Nth Room case’.

The Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency announced on the 26th that it has formed a ‘Special Investigation Unit for Digital Sex Crimes,’ led by the first division chief of the provincial agency, aiming to eradicate digital sex crimes and to carry out strict crackdowns and victim protection activities.

The special investigation unit is composed of departments responsible for investigating digital sex crimes, analyzing digital evidence, protecting victims, and providing gender-sensitivity training for investigators.

These departments will extend the originally scheduled special crackdown on the four major cyber sexual violence distribution channels?▲Telegram and other SNS ▲Dark web ▲Pornographic sites ▲Webhard?from the end of June until the end of the year, mobilizing all investigative resources for focused enforcement.

The Jeonnam police plan to do their utmost to ensure that digital sex crimes using overseas-based SNS and other platforms are apprehended through international cooperation with foreign investigative agencies and global IT companies. They will also recover criminal proceeds through pre-indictment seizure and notification to the National Tax Service, preventing digital sex crimes from gaining a foothold in our society.

Furthermore, in collaboration with related agencies such as the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, the Korea Communications Commission, and the Korea Communications Standards Commission, they will promptly delete and block illegal recordings, strengthen victim protection and support through counseling connections, legal and medical assistance, and continuously conduct gender-sensitivity training for investigators to prevent secondary damage during investigations and raise awareness.

Moon Sang-sang, head of the Cyber Investigation Unit, stated, “Digital sex crimes not only destroy a person’s soul but also threaten the very foundation of the social community. Therefore, the Jeonnam police are determined to completely eradicate these heinous crimes by mobilizing all possible means to relentlessly track down and arrest producers, distributors, as well as accomplices and abettors.”
