[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kang Joo-hee] A man in his 60s who proposed prostitution to a middle school girl was fined.

The Jeju District Court Criminal Division 4 (Presiding Judge Seo Geun-chan) announced on the 23rd that Mr. A, who was indicted for violating the Act on the Protection of Children and Juveniles from Sexual Abuse, was sentenced to a fine of 5 million won. The court also ordered Mr. A to complete a 40-hour sexual violence treatment program and imposed a two-year employment restriction at institutions related to children and adolescents.

Mr. A is accused of calling Ms. B last September and proposing prostitution at an unmanned motel, offering 200,000 won.

On the 18th of the same month, Mr. A gave 10,000 won in cash to Ms. B (14), who was wearing a school uniform and waiting for a bus at a bus stop in Hallim-eup, Jeju City, saying, "Let's hang out with uncle. Contact me," which led to further communication.

The victim, Ms. B, did not go to the unmanned motel, so the act did not actually lead to prostitution.

The court stated the sentencing reason, "Although it is a serious offense to lure a youth whose sexual awareness has not yet been properly formed and encourage them to sell sex, we considered that the defendant admitted the wrongdoing and has no prior criminal record."
