[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] Despite the impact of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), places like Ueno Park in Tokyo, Japan, were crowded with citizens wanting to enjoy the cherry blossoms.

On the 22nd, the Japan Meteorological Agency announced that cherry blossoms in Tokyo had fully bloomed 12 days earlier than usual. Tokyo is at a similar latitude to Busan.

The Meteorological Agency declares full bloom when more than 80% of the standard cherry trees bloom each year. This is the third full bloom declaration in Japan this year, following Okinawa and Amami.

The reason the full bloom period of cherry blossoms in Tokyo was nearly two weeks earlier than usual is because this winter was warm and the daytime temperatures in recent days have been around 20 degrees Celsius, making it mild.

Despite the spread of COVID-19, many citizens reportedly flocked to Japan's cherry blossom viewing spots between the weekend days of the 21st and 22nd.
