The People's Party Proportional Representation Candidate Recommendation Committee announced that there would be "no 'incumbent premium'" in the basic direction of the nomination screening. Among the incumbents, lawmakers Kwon Eun-hee and Lee Tae-gyu have applied for the People's Party proportional representation nomination.
On the afternoon of the 15th, Jung Yeon-jeong, Chairperson of the People's Party Proportional Representation Candidate Recommendation Committee, held a press conference at the People's Party headquarters on the 'Proportional Representation Candidate Selection Policy' and said regarding the two lawmakers, "What kind of premium would there be?" adding, "They are going through the same procedures as other applicants. The results cannot be predicted."
She continued, "Interviews for the two have not yet been conducted, but I do not think they will have any advantage or that they will pass the nomination process especially easily." She also stated, "Although 111 people applied by the 13th, due to many inquiries, we will hold an additional recruitment for 1 to 2 days."
Chairperson Jung emphasized the screening criteria, saying, "Important keywords from the founding spirit of the People's Party and the value orientation of Representative Ahn Cheol-soo are 'reform' and 'overcoming two-party politics.'" She added, "Another is the ability to perform parliamentary duties as a lawmaker." She further stated, "We will focus on reform and work ability as key points for preparing the People's Party for the presidential election in two years and for workers in the reformative reorganization of the opposition."
The recommendation committee plans to complete all procedures before the 23rd after screening applicants' reform orientation and work performance ability through first and second interviews. Additionally, 50% of the 100 to 200 electors who finalize the committee's screening results will be allocated to young party members. The People's Party has decided to field only proportional representation candidates in this general election.
