[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] The Indian government has decided to impose entry restrictions on European countries such as France, Germany, and Spain as the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) spreads to Europe. Previously, the Indian government had imposed entry restrictions on countries with severe COVID-19 outbreaks, including South Korea, Japan, Italy, and Iran.

On the 10th, the Indian government announced, "For French, German, and Spanish nationals who have not entered India, all previously issued visas will be suspended." The Indian government also decided to invalidate visas for other foreigners who have visited these countries after February 1. This is the same measure that the Indian government applied on the 3rd to South Korea, Japan, Italy, and Iran. As COVID-19 rapidly spreads in various parts of Europe, including France and Germany, the Indian government has taken steps to restrict entry for nationals of these countries.

Additionally, the Indian government announced that foreigners arriving from major COVID-19 outbreak areas such as China, South Korea, Japan, Italy, and Thailand will be required to undergo a 14-day self-quarantine. As of this date, the Indian government has reported a cumulative total of 50 confirmed COVID-19 cases in India. On the 10th alone, six new confirmed cases were identified, all of whom had entered India from overseas locations such as the United States and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). According to local media including the Times of India, based on independent tallies from state governments and hospitals in southern Kerala, Karnataka, and western Maharashtra, the total number of confirmed cases has reached 62.
