The agreement includes conducting a flora vegetation survey of major island areas (44 islands) in Sinan-gun to propose measures for the conservation and management of excellent ecological resources, as well as jointly promoting data construction, island biological resource utilization, ecosystem service application, and English publication. Additionally, from this year until 2022, they agreed to mutually cooperate on academic research related to major islands.

Furthermore, through ecological surveys by the Korean Vegetation Society, which has extensive experience in ecological surveys with the Ministry of Environment, National Parks, and local governments, it is expected to greatly assist in creating exhibition and educational materials for the Island Native Plant Conservation Center being built on Jaeun-do to foster awareness of protecting Sinan-gun’s natural ecosystem resources and native plants.

Sinan-gun was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2009, and in 2016, the entire area of Sinan-gun (3,238.74㎢) was expandedly designated. According to the literature survey on the biota of the Sinan Dadohae Biosphere Reserve, a total of 1,878 species of plants native to Sinan-gun were surveyed.

Park Woo-ryang, Governor of Sinan-gun, said, “This agreement is significant as a starting point for local governments to voluntarily secure and conserve vegetation resources in island areas,” and added, “To strengthen Sinan-gun’s international status, let us cooperate in developing island policies and jointly promote projects to secure sustainable ecological island content befitting a biosphere reserve.”
