[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Galaxy S20 Ultra did not bend during a rigorous durability test, and no scratches remained when the display was scratched with a fingernail.

On the 8th (local time), Jack Nelson, who runs the YouTube channel JerryRigEverything, conducted tests on the Galaxy S20 Ultra by scratching the display with a Mohs hardness pick and applying force to bend the device. Scratches only appeared from level 7 and above, and the device continued to function normally even when exposed to a lighter flame.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra model features Gorilla Glass 6 on both the front and back, with a premium aluminum chassis on the sides. Gorilla Glass is a scratch-resistant material, and no significant marks were left from Mohs hardness levels 2 to 5. Scratches appeared at level 6, and grooves were carved at level 7. When the aluminum sides were scratched with a knife, the coated parts peeled off, and the power and volume buttons were easily torn off.

Even when a lighter was held against the screen for about 10 seconds, no soot remained, and the screen continued to operate smoothly. When the screen was scratched with the Mohs hardness pick and scratches appeared, the fingerprint recognition function still worked properly. Jack Nelson evaluated, "The display fingerprint recognition function had no major issues even after scratches appeared."

The back also features a Gorilla Glass 6 panel, so no scratch marks remained when the rear camera was scratched with a knife. Despite the 'camera bump' design, it has considerable durability. When trying to bend the Galaxy S20 Ultra with both hands, only slight movement was observed, and bending the device failed.

In the drop test results by the YouTube channel PhoneBuff comparing the Galaxy S20 Ultra and iPhone 11 Pro Max, the Galaxy S20 Ultra showed a more robust performance. When dropped with the back facing down, the iPhone 11 Pro Max’s back developed spiderweb-like cracks, but the Galaxy S20 Ultra remained intact. When dropped with the front facing down, multiple cracks appeared on the left side of the iPhone 11 Pro Max’s front display. In contrast, only minor cracks appeared on the edge of the Galaxy S20 Ultra. In an additional test where both devices were dropped 10 times consecutively from a height of 15 meters, severe cracks appeared on the exterior, and the display and camera did not function properly.

IT specialist media Engadget stated, "The Galaxy S20 Ultra, priced at $1,400, withstood Jack Nelson’s notorious durability tests and suffered less damage than the iPhone 11 Pro Max in drop tests," adding, "While it’s an advantage that you don’t need to treat your smartphone like a baby, you shouldn’t handle it recklessly like with Samsung’s 'XPro Cover' either."
