Creative Musical 'Samwol-ui Geudeul' Highlighting the 60th Anniversary of the Masan 3·15 Uprising

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The original musical "Those of March," which focuses on the Masan March 15 Uprising that sparked the April 19 Revolution, will be performed from the 21st to the 25th at the Arko Arts Theater Grand Theater in Daehangno.

"Those of March" is a work commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Masan March 15 Uprising, organized by the March 15 Uprising Commemoration Association, hosted by the theater company Gaekseok and Stage, and sponsored by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, Gyeongsangnam-do, and Changwon City.

The March 15 Uprising was a large-scale protest that took place in Masan in 1960 against the fraudulent election by the Syngman Rhee Liberal Party regime. Many citizens who stood against injustice and corruption were sacrificed by public authority. The spark of the March 15 democratization movement spread nationwide and led to the April 19 Revolution.

"Those of March" is based on the life of the real person Oh Seong-won and depicts the struggle of common people to protect democracy in 1960. Through the ordinary citizen Oh Seong-won, not politicians or those in power, it portrays the spirit of resistance of our neighbors and brothers and sisters who bravely confronted police oppression in a bleak situation, as well as the sacrifices of many who sought to defend democracy.

"Those of March" is a production performed for the first time in 10 years since the original musical "When March Comes," commemorating the 50th anniversary of the March 15 Uprising in 2010. "When March Comes" sold out all nine performances when staged in Changwon, Gyeongnam.

Writer Oh Eun-hee, who won the 8th Musical Awards Best Script Award, wrote the script for "Those of March," and composer Heo Soo-hyun, who received the 8th Yegreen Musical Awards Music Award, composed the music. Film actor Moon Sung-geun directed the production, with director Chu Jeong-hwa, known for musicals such as "Interview," "Ludwig," and "Blue Rain," participating as co-director.

Lim Kang-sung, who appeared in musicals such as "Every Moment Was You" and "Secretly, Greatly," plays Kang Jeong-bok, a special police officer who confronts the March 15 protesters. Heo Min-jin, who appeared in the musical "Hero," was cast as Kang Jeong-hwa, Kang Jeong-bok's younger sister.

Park Jun-hwi and Bang Seon-hyuk were cast as Oh Seong-won, who was shot and killed by Kang Jeong-bok during the March 15 protest and appears as a ghost before Jeong-bok. Park Jun-hwi has appeared in musicals such as "The Goddess Is Watching" and "The Brothers Karamazov," while Bang Seon-hyuk previously played Oh Seong-won in the play "Your History," which dealt with the March 15 Uprising.

Kim Ju-ho, who appeared in musicals such as "Sejong, 1446," "Secretly, Greatly," and "The Brothers Karamazov," passionately plays Lee Yong-beom, the provincial party chairman of the Liberal Party. Other cast members include Jeong Ui-wook as Kim Pyeong-do, Jeon Su-mi as the woman (Ginkgo tree), and Kim Eun-joo as Aunt Agu.
