[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Saeng-hye] McDonald's announced on the 9th that due to the recent spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), the number of customers purchasing burger sets through drive-thru and delivery to enjoy dining at home has increased.
According to McDonald's, sales on the drive-thru platform 'McDrive' increased by 20% over the past three weeks, and the sales proportion of the delivery platform 'McDelivery' also slightly increased. A more noticeable aspect is the clear upward trend in the average purchase amount per person and the number of burger sets purchased.
The average purchase amount per person at McDrive increased by about 12% over the past three weeks, and delivery also saw an increase rate of more than double. Among restaurant visitors, the proportion of customers who bulk-pack (take out) three or more burger sets has increased, and the usage of multi-person burger set discount coupons provided through the official McDonald's mobile app has also risen.
McDonald's analyzes that as families spend more time at home due to remote work, refraining from gatherings, and school delays, customers are purchasing meals not only for themselves but also for their families, resulting in more instances of eating together at home. Additionally, the variety of menus including burgers, side menus, and desserts satisfies the preferences of all age groups, male and female, and the convenience and cost-effectiveness make it an affordable meal for the whole family. Previously, more customers purchased meals for themselves due to the spread of single-person households and solo dining culture.
Recently, the desire to avoid crowded peak hours and the environment created by remote work, which frees customers from fixed meal times, have led to orders being placed throughout the day rather than concentrated at specific meal times, representing a new pattern change.
A McDonald's representative said, "The number of customers ordering multiple burger sets for family meals has noticeably increased recently," adding, "Especially because of the advantage of being able to use the service quickly and conveniently without face-to-face contact, the largest bulk orders are being made through McDrive."
