Gangdong-gu, Identifying Residents' Interest Areas in District Administration Through Social Data Analysis

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangdong-gu (District Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) has recently analyzed social data from the past three years to understand residents' evaluations and areas of interest regarding district administration.

The district conducted big data analysis on a total of 97,377 social data items related to the keyword "Gangdong-gu," including 48,857 news articles, 37,687 tweets, and 10,833 blog posts generated from 2017 to 2019.

The analysis showed that positive keywords steadily increased from 38.7% in 2017 to 50% in 2019, while negative keywords significantly decreased from 49.3% in 2017 to 33% in 2019.

This indicates that residents positively evaluate the current policies and direction of Gangdong-gu.

In particular, reflecting residents' expectations for Gangdong-gu as it advances toward becoming a large city with a population of 550,000, keywords such as "expectation," "development," "effort," and "support" frequently appeared. Positive evaluations were mainly given to major projects such as "free school uniform support," "establishment of self-regulations on fine dust," and "Phase 4 of Subway Line 9 project."

Looking at each year, in 2017, various projects in diverse fields such as Cheonho Underground Passage Culture Gallery, first aid education, and family day for vulnerable groups received balanced attention. In 2018, the establishment of "self-regulations on fine dust" attracted significant attention, with keyword occurrences more than doubling compared to the average.

Additionally, policies for vulnerable groups, such as wheelchair swings for children with disabilities and installation of yellow shade shelters in school zones, received positive responses. In 2019, the ice pack recycling collection system, which won the Korea Policy of the Year Award, and station area complex development were major issues that garnered much interest.

As Gangdong aims to be a "people-centered smart city," interest in smart cities and big data also increased. Keywords related to artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and smart cities rose from 665 occurrences in 2017 to 1,193 in 2019, more than doubling and accounting for about 40% of all keywords, indicating rapidly growing resident interest in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Negative keywords included reconstruction, real estate, local economy, and incidents such as fires. Gangdong-gu plans to maintain continuous attention and efforts to revitalize the local economy, which has been depressed due to COVID-19, and to resolve major issues such as reconstruction.
