Up to 5 Million Won Support for Separating Unisex Restrooms... Promoting Crime Prevention and a Safe Restroom Culture
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangseo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Noh Hyun-song) is promoting a safety improvement project targeting unisex restrooms managed by the private sector.
This is to address concerns that unisex restrooms are hotspots for sex crimes such as hidden cameras and sexual harassment, aiming to resolve user inconvenience and safety issues.
The support targets first-floor restrooms within the district installed by private entities where male and female spaces are not separated.
Priority is given to restrooms located along main roads that can be used by multiple people.
This project involves separating restroom entrances to divide the space, and if entrance separation is difficult, dividing male and female restrooms by floor.
For places where separation is difficult due to facility conditions, safety facilities will be supported. This includes installation of emergency bells and CCTV, lighting improvements, and door locking devices for toilet stalls.
The support amount is funded by the city: 5 million KRW for gender separation, 1 million KRW for floor separation, and 500,000 KRW for safety facility installation, with additional costs borne by the applicant.
Also, restrooms that receive funding must remain open for 6 months to 3 years after completion, depending on the amount supported.
Applicants wishing to participate can download the application form and consent form from the Gangseo-gu Office website by April 29, fill them out, and submit them in person to the Gangseo-gu Office Resource Circulation Division (1st floor, Gayang-dong Annex, 38 Yangcheon-ro 59-gil, Gangseo-gu).
A district official said, “We will strive to separate private unisex restrooms that are safety blind spots to create restrooms where everyone can feel safe,” and added, “We ask for much interest and participation in this project to establish a safety culture.”
