Jongno-gu Seeks Emerging Gugak Artists to Showcase Beautiful Korean Traditional Sounds

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Donhwamun-ro, where major related institutions such as the predecessor of the National Gugak Center, the Yi Wangjik Aakbu (李王職雅樂部), were located, and where even today numerous transmission centers, related shops, and research institutes of many masters and famous singers can be found everywhere.

In this place, which is nothing less than the center of Korean traditional music, Jongno-gu has been steadily hosting events such as the ‘Gugak-ro Gugak Grand Festival,’ and in December 2017, established the ‘Uri Sori Library’ (Samildae-ro 30-gil 47).

Jongno-gu, which has been striving to make gugak a part of everyday life, is now holding a gugak concert ‘Shin(Pan) Nolhui (新판놀희, 戱)’ featuring emerging artists and is recruiting participants.

This performance, held at the outdoor performance hall of the Uri Sori Library and conducted with natural acoustics without separate equipment, is designed to provide young gugak artists with a precious opportunity to perform on stage and to showcase the diverse charms of our traditional sounds to the audience.

Eligibility for participation includes groups or individuals with an average age of 35 or younger, and applicants must submit works that fall into at least one of the following categories: ▲original compositions based on Korean traditional music ▲original compositions based on the style of Korean traditional music ▲pure Korean traditional music repertoire excluding original compositions ▲premieres based on gugak.

Required submission documents include a performance application and a performance video, and applications can be submitted via email by March 20.

The final selected teams are scheduled to perform on stage in May.

In addition, participants will receive support such as production and promotion of performance leaflets, opportunities to appear at gugak events at the Uri Sori Library, and a modest performance fee. For more detailed information, please refer to the Jongno Cultural Foundation website (www.jfac.or.kr) or contact the Uri Sori Library (☎070-4450-5014~6).

Starting in 2018 and now in its third year, the ‘Shinpan Nolhui’ performance is recruiting an ‘SNS Citizen Promotion Team’ for the first time this year to accelerate the promotion of our beautiful traditional sounds.

Anyone aged 15 or older who operates personal SNS accounts and is interested in traditional arts can apply. Applicants should be proficient in managing blogs, YouTube, Instagram, etc., and possess fresh ideas and passion to creatively promote this performance.

Applications can be submitted by downloading the application form from the Jongno Cultural Foundation website and sending it via email by March 31.

Kim Young-jong, the district mayor, said, “This meaningful event will be held on Gugak-ro, where the history and stories of gugak are fully contained, allowing talented emerging artists to showcase their skills and meet the audience. We hope many people interested in the Uri Sori Library’s representative planned performance, Shinpan Nolhui, will participate.”

The Uri Sori Library, where this performance will be held, is the 17th library in Jongno-gu and has been created as a gugak-specialized space where visitors can feel the charm of Korean traditional music.

To promote the beauty and history of gugak, sound sources were collected through consultation and cooperation with related institutions such as the National Gugak Center, the National Intangible Heritage Center, and Gugak Broadcasting, and a system to listen to these has been established and provided to visitors. It has established itself as a ‘reading space where gugak flows,’ holding not only gugak-related books but also general books evenly.
