Jay Park Accompanies Jung Chan-sung as Interpreter
ESPN Reporter: "Ortega Raised Issue Over Jay Park's Interpretation"
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Seul-gi] Singer Park Jaebeom was reportedly slapped by mixed martial arts fighter Brian Ortega, but Park Jaebeom's side stated, "Park Jaebeom is in completely normal condition."
On the 8th, Ariel Helwani, a reporter for the American sports media ESPN, wrote on his Twitter, "Korean musician Park Jaebeom was hit by Brian Ortega. Brian Ortega took issue with Park Jaebeom's interpreter."
Helwani added, "Brian Ortega saw Jung Chan-sung go to the restroom and approached Park Jaebeom, asking 'Are you Park Jaebeom?' Park Jaebeom answered 'Yes.' Then Brian Ortega slapped Park Jaebeom's cheek with his palm."
On the same day, UFC fighter Angela Hill also cited Ariel Helwani's Twitter post, explaining, "It happened right in front of me."
As the incident became known, netizens criticized, saying, "Is it acceptable for a professional athlete to assault a civilian?" and "The athlete should be disciplined."
Park Jaebeom's side stated, "There is absolutely no issue with his health."
Park Jaebeom's agency AOMG said on the 9th, "It is true that there was a dispute initiated by Ortega's side, but security guards quickly intervened and escorted him out," adding, "The artist is in completely normal condition with no injuries or health issues that many people are worried about."
On the 8th, Park Jaebeom was invited as a guest fighter at UFC 248 and accompanied mixed martial arts fighter Jung Chan-sung. Both belong to the same agency, and Park Jaebeom assisted as Jung Chan-sung's interpreter.
Previously, in 2019, Jung Chan-sung and Ortega were scheduled to fight at the UFC Korea event held in Busan. However, Ortega's side canceled the match due to Ortega's cruciate ligament injury.
Regarding this, Jung Chan-sung said in an interview with Helwani last month, "(Ortega) already ran away from me once. I don't particularly want to catch him," and Park Jaebeom interpreted Jung Chan-sung's interview at that time.
After hearing Jung Chan-sung's words, Ortega expressed displeasure not only toward Jung Chan-sung but also toward Park Jaebeom, who interpreted. He responded, "I welcome you to come watch my fight. But if you run into me, don't be surprised if I hit you. Injury and running away are different things."
