[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Hee-eun Park] Zhang Weili (30), the only Chinese female UFC champion, successfully defended her title after a fierce competition with Joanna J?drzejczyk (32, Poland).
On the 8th (Korean time), at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, USA, during the co-main event strawweight title match (1st defense) of 'UFC 248', Zhang Weili won a split decision (48-47/47-48/48-47) against her opponent J?drzejczyk after an intense fight throughout all 5 rounds.
Zhang Weili was known for her powerful punches, but the skilled techniques of former champion J?drzejczyk could not be overlooked. The match was decided by a margin of just one point.
Meanwhile, J?drzejczyk belittled Zhang Weili's skills by saying she was "lucky to become champion at home," and in January, during the height of COVID-19 in Wuhan, China, she posted on social media a photo wearing a gas mask that appeared to mock Chinese people. In response, Zhang Weili expressed her intention to settle the score in the Octagon.
After the match, Zhang Weili stated in an Octagon interview that she hopes her victory brings comfort to her homeland, China.
Meanwhile, Jung Chan-sung (33), who aims to become the first Asian male UFC champion, also watched the match that day.
