[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jeong] The city of Daegu has expressed its intention to refuse the 10 billion won donation made by Shincheonji Church of Jesus to the Daegu Community Chest of Korea.
On the 6th, Daegu Mayor Kwon Young-jin stated in a regular briefing, "Yesterday, Shincheonji announced that it donated 10 billion won to the Daegu Community Chest of Korea, but both the Daegu city government and the Daegu Community Chest have rejected this donation," adding, "What Shincheonji should do is not to donate money. Lee Man-hee, the chairman of Shincheonji, along with the Shincheonji leadership and members, must actively cooperate with quarantine efforts."
Mayor Kwon said, "We earnestly request and warn Shincheonji," and urged, "Shincheonji members should actively comply with admission to the residential treatment centers." He added, "Many social resources are being wasted and the public is anxious," emphasizing, "Those who are to receive treatment have the obligation to enter the treatment centers even if it is inconvenient. Refusing or delaying admission to the residential treatment centers for any other reason is unacceptable."
Shincheonji stated the previous day that "the donation will be used for disaster relief activities and support for relief supplies in Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions, which are struggling due to the spread of COVID-19, as well as nationwide." The donation was reportedly deposited at once, with 10 billion won to the Daegu branch of the Community Chest of Korea and 2 billion won to the central headquarters.
