[Asia Economy Reporter Buaeri] Kakao's social networking service (SNS), KakaoTalk, experienced a service outage on the morning of the 2nd, causing significant inconvenience to users.
The KakaoTalk outage began at 9 a.m. and lasted for about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Some users faced difficulties logging into KakaoTalk properly or experienced delays in sending and receiving messages. The issue occurred on both the PC and mobile versions.
A Kakao representative stated, "Due to a temporary error in the internal network, some users experienced problems with sending/receiving messages and logging in," adding, "The issue was detected immediately, and after an emergency inspection, all services have now been restored to normal." Kakao did not disclose the specific cause of the internal network error. However, the representative clarified, "The cause was not a traffic surge."
As users experienced inconvenience due to the KakaoTalk error, "KakaoTalk error" became the number one real-time search term on portal sites such as Naver.
With the increase in remote work due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), some users faced disruptions in their work.
Office worker Kim Miseon (29), who is working from home, said, "Our team usually works through KakaoTalk group chats, but now we are having to communicate work tasks individually via phone calls or text messages," expressing her inconvenience.
The situation where KakaoTalk, which has 44.85 million monthly users domestically, went down is not the first time this year.
On January 1st, the first day of the new year, KakaoTalk experienced an error lasting over two hours. At that time, users also faced temporary disruptions such as difficulties in sending messages smoothly.
Kakao explained that an unexpected system error occurred during the "emergency response mode" prepared for the New Year's greeting traffic.
