[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The United Future Party emphasized the need to fully support the Daegu region, where the number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) has surpassed 1,300.
Seong Il-jong, the United Future Party floor spokesperson, stated in a commentary on the 28th, "Hospital beds in the Daegu area are saturated with confirmed patients, and although some beds have been secured in nearby regions, they are far from sufficient." According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of confirmed cases in Daegu reached 1,314 as of that morning.
Spokesperson Seong said, "Eventually, a confirmed patient waiting for hospitalization died. It is said that more than 500 confirmed patients are waiting at home," and emphasized, "Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun instructed all ministries to prioritize securing available hospital beds, but Mayor Kwon Young-jin of Daegu requested bed provision from Governor Lee Jae-myung of Gyeonggi Province and was rejected."
He criticized the government’s rushed administration, saying, "Although the government announced it would supply masks to the market, the mask supply was not delivered on time, and crowds at post offices nationwide and Nonghyup Hanaro Marts left empty-handed in frustration," adding that the Daegu Medical Association is participating voluntarily but "each doctor is managing 10 to 30 patients," highlighting the shortage of medical staff.
Spokesperson Seong emphasized, "The public medical system has collapsed, and the control tower of the quarantine system is completely broken," urging, "Even now, prepare for a prolonged battle by mobilizing all national capabilities including medical care, personnel, equipment, and funding to support and resolve the situation."
