[Asia Economy Reporter Yang Nak-gyu] Due to the impact of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), democratization movement commemorative ceremonies have been consecutively canceled. Following the cancellation of the '60th Anniversary 2.28 Democratization Movement Commemorative Ceremony' scheduled at Daegu Concert House, the 60th Anniversary 3.8 Democratic Uprising Commemorative Ceremony, which was planned for next month, has also been canceled.
On this day, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs announced that it would cancel the 60th Anniversary 3.8 Democratic Uprising Commemorative Ceremony scheduled for next month due to the COVID-19 crisis alert being raised to the severe level.
The Ministry had originally planned to hold the ceremony on the front yard of the Daejeon Modern History Exhibition Hall on the 8th of next month. They prepared to reduce the number of attendees and implement quarantine measures by synthesizing opinions from the 3.8 Democratic Uprising Commemorative Association and others. However, the Ministry explained that due to the recent consecutive occurrences of COVID-19 confirmed cases, reflecting the opinions of related organizations and the local community, the ceremony was canceled.
The 3.8 Democratic Uprising Commemorative Ceremony is an event to inherit and develop the historical significance and noble spirit of the democratic uprising in 1960, when citizens and students in the Daejeon area stood against the dictatorship regime. It was designated as a national memorial day in 2018 and was held as a government-hosted ceremony for the first time last year.
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs canceled the '60th Anniversary 2.28 Democratization Movement Commemorative Ceremony' that was scheduled to be held on the 28th. To mark the 60th anniversary of the 2.28 Democratization Movement this year, the Ministry had planned to reduce the number of attendees and prepare quarantine measures by comprehensively considering opinions from the '2.28 Democratization Movement Commemorative Association.' However, as confirmed COVID-19 cases have recently surged, reflecting the opinions of related organizations and the local community, the event was canceled.
Separately from the cancellation of the ceremonies, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs plans to inform the public of the meaning and value of the democratic spirit through the production of various content that highlights the 2.28 Democratization Movement, which laid the foundation of democracy in Korea.
