Cotton Mask with Electrostatic Filter Attached Shows Similar Performance to KF80 Mask

Dental Masks Block 66~70%
Blocking Rate Drops When Filter Removed

Cotton Mask with Electrostatic Filter Attached Shows Similar Performance to KF80 Mask Attaching an electrostatic filter to a mask enables droplet blocking at the level of a KF80 health mask. (Provided by Seoul City)

[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] Attaching an electrostatic filter to a cotton mask was found to provide performance similar to that of a KF80 health mask.

The Seoul Institute of Health and Environment announced on the 28th the performance evaluation results showing that attaching an electrostatic filter to a handmade cotton mask is as effective in blocking droplet particles as a health mask (KF80).

The Institute conducted droplet particle blocking effectiveness tests on handmade filter cotton masks (with electrostatic filter attached) made by the Saemaeul Women's Association in Gangdong-gu and dental masks. As a result, the handmade filter cotton masks blocked an average of 80?95%, and dental masks blocked 66?70%, showing performance similar to that of KF80 health masks. KF80 means blocking 80% or more of fine particles (average particle size 0.6㎛).

On the other hand, general cotton masks on the market or handmade filter cotton masks with the electrostatic filter removed showed droplet particle blocking rates of 16?22%, which is lower than that of health masks.

The Institute stated, "Since only the filter needs to be replaced, this is expected to be an alternative to the mask shortage in the future," and recommended, "Although general cotton masks are effective in blocking large-sized droplets, it is advised to use them with an electrostatic filter attached for more complete blocking effectiveness."
