[Asia Economy Reporter Joesulgina] The Apple iPhone 11, released in the second half of last year, ranked as the second best-selling smartphone worldwide on an annual basis. The iPhone XR took first place, with Apple showcasing its market dominance by placing a total of six models in the top 10 smartphones list. Samsung Electronics had three models on the list.
According to market research firm Counterpoint Research on the 27th (local time), Apple’s iPhone XR held the top spot with a 3.0% sales share last year. Following that, the iPhone 11, released in September last year, ranked second with 2.1%. Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy A50 came in third with 1.8%, Galaxy A10 was fourth with 1.7%, and China’s OPPO A5 ranked fifth with 1.3%.
Apple placed a total of six models in the '2019 Global Smartphone Sales Top 10' list. Besides the top two models, the iPhone 8 (1.2%), iPhone 11 Pro Max (1.1%), iPhone 7 (1.1%), and iPhone XS Max (1.0%) ranked 6th and 8th through 10th respectively.
Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, did not have any flagship models on the list. Instead, mid-range A series models such as the Galaxy A50, A10, and A20 (7th with 1.1%) dominated. Regionally, the Galaxy A50 and A10 ranked first in Europe, South America, and Africa, surpassing Apple.
9to5Mac reported, "Despite being on the market for only four months, the Apple iPhone 11 ranked second on an annual basis," adding, "Samsung is the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, but Apple dominates markets such as the United States."
However, the top 10 best-selling models accounted for only 15% of total sales. Huawei, targeted by the US-led trade war, ranked only fifth in sales within the Chinese domestic market.
