[Asia Economy (Uijeongbu) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] The 'Gyeonggi Transportation Corporation,' which will oversee Gyeonggi Province's transportation policy, will be launched within this year.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 28th that the feasibility study for establishing the Gyeonggi Transportation Corporation recently passed the review by the Local Public Enterprise Evaluation Institute of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
Accordingly, the province plans to establish the transportation corporation within this year after going through procedures such as a public hearing next month, consultation with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and ordinance enactment.
The Gyeonggi Transportation Corporation will be a dedicated agency managing the integrated public transportation system of 31 cities and counties in the Gyeonggi region.
It will be responsible for integrated management of transportation modes such as buses and railways in the 31 cities and counties, operation and management of the semi-public bus system using a route bidding method, expansion of metropolitan transportation facilities such as transfer parking lots, and operation of new transportation modes.
Last year, the province prepared for the establishment of the transportation corporation by creating the Gyeonggi Transportation Headquarters within the Gyeonggi Urban Corporation.
The results of the study promoted by the province analyzed that, similar to transportation corporations in other cities and provinces such as Seoul, Incheon, and Busan, establishing it as a local public corporation is the most appropriate.
The appropriate capital for establishing the corporation was suggested to be around 9 billion KRW, with the opinion that it is reasonable for Gyeonggi Province to fully invest.
The organization will launch on a small scale with one headquarters and five departments (Management Support Department, Bus Operation Center, Semi-Public Operation Department, Transportation Facilities Department, Railway Operation Department), with personnel limited to within 88 people. Later, plans to diversify projects such as eco-friendly transportation and urban railway operations were proposed.
Park Tae-hwan, Director of the Transportation Bureau of the province, emphasized, "The transportation corporation will improve residents' transportation services through discovering new businesses that harmonize public nature and corporate characteristics."
