[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Amid rising concerns over the COVID-19 crisis, efforts by Mapo-gu residents to overcome the situation are spreading.

On the 26th, an anonymous donor delivered approximately 900,000 KRW in donations, including a piggy bank, along with a letter of encouragement to support those working to prevent the spread of COVID-19, to the Sangam-dong Community Service Center.

According to district officials, this anonymous middle-aged man visited the Sangam-dong Community Service Center around 11:50 a.m. on the 26th, handed an envelope to an employee on duty, and left silently. The envelope contained a piggy bank, a cash envelope, and a letter. Although the staff hurriedly chased after the man, he disappeared riding a motorcycle.

The envelope delivered by the donor contained a cash envelope with 300,000 KRW, a piggy bank holding about 600,000 KRW, and a letter encouraging public officials and volunteers.

The letter read, “I send my small sincerity and heart to those who have suffered sadness and hardship due to COVID-19. It is difficult, but let all neighbors become strength and overcome COVID-19. I pray for and support the public officials who are struggling and all those who serve selflessly.”

The district plans to process this donation as a designated contribution to the Sangam-dong branch of the Community Chest of Korea and use it to help neighbors in need.

Meanwhile, the Hongdae Area Building Owners Association, the largest commercial district in Mapo-gu, has started a voluntary rent reduction campaign to overcome the economic downturn caused by the spread of COVID-19. This is intended to share the pain of tenants amid reduced foot traffic and a decline in foreign tourists.

Lee Chang-song, president of the Hongdae Building Owners Association, recently agreed with tenants not to collect rent for February for all nine floors of his own buildings.

Additionally, as a result of promoting a voluntary rent reduction campaign among the association’s 2,237 members, many building owners have expressed their willingness to participate.

Accordingly, the district is considering supporting building owners who reduce commercial rents by covering related costs such as disinfection, sterilization, and electrical safety inspections for the buildings.

Along with this, on the 27th, Jung Man-seong, CEO of B-Balance located in Seongsan-dong, Mapo-gu, donated 2,000 hand sanitizers to be used for neighbors in need.

The district announced that the donated hand sanitizers will be distributed first to facilities used by vulnerable groups within the community.

Yoo Dong-gyun, mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “I am deeply grateful that residents are joining efforts to overcome this difficult situation,” and added, “The district will do its best to block community infections as much as possible and minimize damage.”
