Jangseong-gun, Early Start of Cheongun Underpass Construction Project Brings 'Positive Signal'

Consultation Completed with Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Korea Rail Network Authority

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Oh Gilsu] Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, has received a green light for the ‘Cheongun Underpass Construction’ project, which passes beneath the Honam Line railway in Jangseong-eup.

According to Jangseong-gun on the 27th, the ‘Cheongun Underpass Construction Project’ aimed at balanced regional development and providing transportation convenience for local residents has been selected as a target for the railway underpass expansion project.

This decision follows consultations between the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Rail Network Authority. The county plans to promote a business agreement with the Korea Rail Network Authority next month and decide on the national subsidy rate for the railway passage section and the project schedule.

Previously, when the Honam Line railway crossing the central area acted as an obstacle to regional development, Jangseong-gun opened the ‘Jangseong Station Underpass’ in 2006 to resolve the issue.

This led to the construction of LH 1st and 2nd phase public rental housing complexes with 780 households and 300 private apartments in the Yeongcheon-ri area of Jangseong-eup.

However, additional transportation facilities connecting the eastern and western regions are required for the continuous development of the western area of Jangseong.

With the increasing traffic volume in the Jangseong area every year and the urgent need to reinforce the old Cheongun Underpass, which received a D grade in a detailed safety inspection, the necessity of constructing the Cheongun Underpass is becoming more prominent.

Once the Cheongun Underpass is constructed, the western district of Jangseong-eup will be equipped with conditions for developing a complex residential area.

Furthermore, the area around Gisan-ri, where Jangseong Culture and Arts Center, Jangseong County Central Library, Hong Gil-dong Gymnasium, swimming pool, and the Jangseong Public Stadium scheduled for completion at the end of the year are concentrated, will be smoothly connected to the town center, raising the quality of life for residents.

Yoo Doo-seok, the mayor of Jangseong-gun, said, “The Honam Line railway has long hindered the urban expansion of Jangseong,” adding, “The Cheongun Underpass is an essential facility for sustainable urban development in the future. We will actively promote it with the top priority on residents’ convenience and revitalization of the local economy.”
