"Blue Light at Industry-Low Level of 6.5%, Power Consumption Reduced by 15% Compared to Previous Year"
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Samsung Display's latest OLED for smartphones is receiving high evaluations from global certification bodies for power consumption and blue light reduction.
Samsung Display announced on the 27th that its latest smartphone OLED has been recognized as an 'Eye Care' display by SGS and an 'Energy Saving' display by UL by lowering the blue light ratio and reducing power consumption. SGS and UL are global certification and inspection specialists headquartered in Switzerland and the United States, respectively.
According to SGS, Samsung Display's latest OLED has the industry's lowest blue light ratio at 6.5%, which is lower than the 7.5% blue light ratio of the OLED introduced last year. Samsung Display explained that its OLED products have about 70% less blue light ratio compared to typical LCDs.
UL stated that power consumption related to photo, broadcasting, and internet content usage has also decreased by about 15%, from 1.5W to approximately 1.3W in the new product.
According to market research firm IDC, the share of 5G smartphones in the global smartphone market is expected to increase from 14% (190 million units) this year to 50% (750 million units) in 2024. Additionally, the monthly data usage per smartphone user is projected to rise significantly from 7GB in 2018 to 32GB in 2024.
Samsung Display explained that it continues research and development to improve the efficiency of organic materials to emit more light with the same energy in response to changes in the smartphone market.
Baek Ji-ho, Vice President and Head of Small and Medium-sized Strategy Marketing Team at Samsung Display, said, "With the commercialization of 5G, ultra-high resolution streaming services such as 4K and 8K, cloud-based gaming content, and environments with constant network connectivity are expanding, increasing individual mobile device usage time. OLED, which offers vivid image quality, differentiated design, excellent power consumption, and eye protection, is the optimal display to lead the 5G era."
