Distribution of Box Gardens to Residents and Local Organizations from March 12 to 26... Applications Available on Gangbuk-gu Website, 2,000 Boxes Distributed on a First-Come, First-Served Basis
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangbuk-gu (Mayor Park Gyeom-su) is distributing box gardens that allow easy cultivation of plants in small spaces such as verandas and rooftops.
The box garden set consists of a plastic container, one 50-liter bag of potting soil, a manual, and four seedlings each of green lettuce and red lettuce.
The container is equipped with wheels for easy mobility, and a support frame is also provided to secure plant stems and cover them with plastic. Additionally, it features a built-in water reservoir for easy water management.
Applicants must be residents of Gangbuk-gu or organizations located in Gangbuk-gu, and the application period is from March 12 to 26.
A personal contribution fee of 8,000 KRW per set must be paid upon distribution.
Interested parties can apply through the Gangbuk-gu Office website (http://www.gangbuk.go.kr → Information by Category → Local Economy → Urban Agriculture → Box Garden Internet Application).
Individuals can order up to five sets, while organizations such as villas, multi-family rooftops, daycare centers, and kindergartens can order up to 30 sets.
The district plans to distribute a total of 2,000 box garden sets on a first-come, first-served basis to online applicants. However, those who fail to pay the contribution fee will be excluded from distribution, and applicants from the previous year will be given lower priority.
Results will be individually notified via text message on March 27.
The box gardens are scheduled to be delivered collectively by the supplier starting April 6.
A Gangbuk-gu official stated, “Through the box gardens, residents can directly grow safe and healthy food in urban areas, and observing plant growth will also aid children’s experiential learning. We hope people enjoy a healthy and leisurely life by cultivating small gardens.”
