The National Integrated Public Officials Labor Union (Chairman Lee Chung-jae, Integrated Union) issued this statement on the 26th, expressing appreciation for the efforts of public officials and medical personnel across the country who have been working to prevent and contain infectious diseases since the domestic inflow of COVID-19 at the end of last year.
In the statement, the Integrated Union said, “As of the 26th, the cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has surpassed 1,000, with 12 deaths, increasing the worries and concerns of the public.”
It also stated, “Most events where people gather have been canceled or postponed indefinitely, and the economic downturn is exacerbating difficulties for small and medium-sized merchants.”
The statement pointed out that the start of the school year for kindergartens, elementary, middle, and high schools nationwide has been delayed by one week, and with confirmed cases increasing nationwide including in some major cities, the difficulties and concerns of the public are growing.
The Integrated Union added, “Despite these hardships caused by COVID-19, the reason the public holds hope is due to the tireless efforts of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, local government officials nationwide, the Central Accident Response Headquarters, the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, and medical professionals across the country, who have worked day and night to prevent and contain the infectious disease, provide rapid information to the public, and disseminate response guidelines.” They extended “their gratitude and applause to these individuals.”
