[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Hyundai Motor Company has decided that labor and management will join hands to establish a proactive emergency response system related to COVID-19. To this end, they plan to do their best to block the virus within the workplace and also support the community in overcoming the crisis.

On the 25th, Hyundai Motor labor and management held a special agreement to overcome the COVID-19 crisis in the Avante Room of the Ulsan Plant main building.

In this special agreement, labor and management jointly recognized the seriousness of the situation caused by the spread of COVID-19 and agreed to thoroughly establish an emergency response system, strengthen preventive measures, and take proactive emergency actions to prevent further spread. Additionally, they decided to continue support activities to revitalize the domestic market and local economy, which have been depressed due to COVID-19, and to help partner companies overcome the crisis.

The special agreement to overcome the COVID-19 crisis mainly includes ▲strengthening preventive activities ▲proactive emergency measures in case of confirmed cases ▲joint labor-management support activities for partner companies and community crisis recovery.

To block the spread of infection within the workplace, labor and management agreed to strengthen workplace access management by ▲mandating mask-wearing for all entrants ▲enhancing fever checks for employees using commuter buses ▲displaying identification numbers on commuter buses to track vehicles used by confirmed cases. Furthermore, they decided to close multi-use facilities such as the off-site rehabilitation center, the gym and swimming pool inside the Hyundai Motor Culture Hall, and to completely suspend cultural center programs.

Proactive emergency measures will also be implemented in case of confirmed cases. Upon confirmation, the building to which the confirmed case belongs will be closed first and disinfected. Contacts will be immediately asked to leave, be quarantined, and undergo testing as a proactive response. The results of these measures and internal investigations will be provided to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency to enable efficient response. In addition, they plan to faithfully comply with epidemiological investigations and resulting measures by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency.

To support partner companies struggling with sales losses due to COVID-19, they agreed to help ensure stable year-round supply by maximizing production linked to market demand, timely market supply, and shortening negotiation periods. Recognizing that increasing finished vehicle quality directly relates to employment stability of partner company employees, they plan to form a ‘Labor-Management Joint Quality Improvement Response Team’ to establish measures for improving finished vehicle quality.

They will also support community crisis recovery. Hyundai Motor labor and management decided to carry out activities to revitalize the local economy by purchasing local currencies (such as Ulsan Pay, Zero Pay, etc.) and Onnuri gift certificates operated by local governments to support the revitalization of the depressed local economy and help small and medium-sized merchants overcome the crisis. This will be promoted after separate labor-management working-level consultations. Along with this, to resolve the blood supply shortage in medical sites caused by the spread of COVID-19, they will actively promote blood donation campaigns at all domestic plants.

A Hyundai Motor official said, “Everyone is going through a difficult and challenging time due to the spread of COVID-19,” and added, “Labor and management will do their best to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and overcome difficulties together with the local community and partner companies.”
