[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyeon-jin] The Japanese government stated on the 25th that its position demanding the implementation of the Korea-Japan comfort women agreement remains unchanged in response to Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha's mention of the issue of Japanese military comfort women victims at the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council meeting.
According to the Mainichi Shimbun and others, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a regular briefing that morning, "Omi Asako, Political Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, who attended the meeting, plans to appropriately explain our country's response." He added, "Regarding the comfort women issue, our position of strongly demanding the steady implementation of the Korea-Japan agreement (signed in 2015) remains unchanged."
Secretary Suga is interpreted to have referred to the content included in the 2015 Korea-Japan comfort women agreement, which calls for "refraining from criticism related to the comfort women issue in the international community."
Earlier, on the 24th (local time), Minister Kang said, "The Korean government continues to support the efforts of the Japanese military comfort women victims to restore their dignity and honor," adding, "Their painful experiences must not be forgotten by current and future generations."
