[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] Jangheung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Jeong Jong-sun) announced on the 24th that it has been finally selected for the intangible cultural asset No. 91 Tile Maker Workshop Improvement (New Construction) Project contest, securing a total project cost of 900 million KRW.

The county participated in this Cultural Heritage Administration contest to improve the working environment of the only national intangible cultural asset traditional technique holder of tile making in the country.

Following the contest selection, plans are underway to newly construct a tile kiln, workshop, molding and drying area, storage yard, and experience space.

Kim Chang-dae, recognized last June as the only national intangible cultural asset tile maker in the country, was a disciple of the late Han Hyeong-jun (former tile maker holder, 1929?2013).

Tile maker Kim Chang-dae has devoted about 20 years to the preservation and transmission of tile making, and since being selected as a training assistant in 2009, he has participated in the repair of various cultural assets such as National Treasure No. 1 Sungnyemun Gate and Treasure No. 1763 Buyongjeong Pavilion of Changdeokgung Palace.

Jeong Jong-sun, Governor of Jangheung-gun, said, “We plan to actively support so that traditional tile making technology can greatly contribute to cultural heritage restoration projects,” adding, “We will also develop experience events linked to traditional tile making technology to help revitalize local tourism.”
