Installation of Counseling Centers for Migrant Women Victims of Violence in Chungnam and Jeonbuk

Goal to Establish a Total of 4 Locations This Year

[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] Two counseling centers for migrant women victims of violence will be established in Chungnam and Jeonbuk.

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family announced on the 24th that, following the review by the screening committee for the operation of counseling centers for migrant women victims of violence, it has selected two additional centers this year, following five centers last year in Daegu, Chungbuk, Incheon, and others.

The two institutions are the Sejong Chungnam Catholic Social Welfare Association, a social welfare corporation in Chungnam, and the Asia Migrant Women Center in Jeonbuk.

The counseling centers for migrant women victims of violence are established to provide professional counseling, interpretation and translation, medical, and legal services in Korean and the native languages of the migrant women when they face domestic violence, sexual violence, marital conflicts, and other issues.

Last year, the five established counseling centers for migrant women provided 5,332 counseling sessions and supported 5,348 victims.

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family aims to open two more centers this year and plans to select them by April.

Additionally, the ministry will assign one counselor to each of the 43 domestic violence counseling centers to enhance counseling expertise and support victims who wish to find employment by enabling them to participate in community-based vocational education, training, and self-reliance support programs. Furthermore, it will expand support by providing 10 rental housing units and a self-reliance support fund of 5 million won.
