Emart to Prioritize Supply of 2.21 Million Masks in Daegu and Gyeongbuk Regions

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] Emart and Traders announced on the 24th that they will urgently sell 2.21 million masks in cooperation with the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) and the mask manufacturer ‘Pilt’ in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk areas, which have been designated as special quarantine zones due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

Of the 2.21 million masks secured this time, 1.41 million units will be supplied starting today to seven Emart stores in Daegu and Gyeongbuk (Gyeongsan Branch, Gamsam Branch, Manchon Branch, Banyawol Branch, Seongseo Branch, Wolbae Branch, Chilseong Branch) with 810,000 units, and one Traders store (Bisan Branch) with 600,000 units for sale.

The masks being sold are ‘Etica’ brand by ‘Pilt’ with a KF94 rating. The price is 820 KRW per unit. Considering that the existing ‘Etica’ KF94 products are sold at over 1,500 KRW in the market, the price is about 45% cheaper. To allow as many customers as possible to purchase masks, sales are limited to 30 units per person.

In addition to the masks sold in stores, 700,000 units will be sold to Daegu Metropolitan City. Daegu Metropolitan City plans to distribute these masks to children, the elderly with vulnerable immunity, and low-income households.

Separately, Emart plans to donate 100,000 masks to the Daegu Metropolitan City Social Disaster Division.

An Emart representative said, "About 20,000 masks were sold at six Emart stores in Daegu over two days from the 19th to the 20th, when confirmed cases in Daegu increased," adding, "If Emart supplies an additional 2.21 million masks to the Daegu and Gyeongbuk areas, it is expected to ease the mask supply shortage in these regions."
