Yongin City Suspends Operation of Major Public Facilities to Prevent COVID-19 Spread

[Asia Economy (Yongin) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province has decided to urgently suspend the operation of public facilities to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

On the 22nd at 8 p.m., Yongin City held an emergency countermeasure meeting chaired by Mayor Baek Gun-gi in the city hall video conference room and announced on the 23rd that it had decided to urgently close public multi-use facilities such as libraries, sports facilities, community centers, and senior citizen centers.

At the meeting, Mayor Baek said, "Although no confirmed cases have occurred yet, please make every effort to thoroughly block the inflow of COVID-19 infections into the jurisdiction, even to an excessive degree."

Accordingly, from the 24th, the city will temporarily suspend the operation of reading rooms in 17 public libraries within the jurisdiction. Book borrowing and returns will be allowed, but the use of reading rooms will be restricted. Small libraries operated by the private sector will be allowed to operate autonomously.

Following the closure decisions made on the 21st for Suji Arpia Sports Center, Namsa Sports Center, Yongin Citizen Sports Center, Yongin Sports Complex, and Yongin Indoor Gymnasium, public sports facilities such as outdoor stadiums, gateball courts, and tennis courts will also restrict group activities and events.

Following Suji District, the 26 community centers in Cheoin and Giheung Districts will temporarily suspend program operations, and 852 senior citizen centers in the jurisdiction will also temporarily suspend operations from the 24th. The Yongin Central Market five-day market will not be held on the 25th.

Mayor Baek emphasized, "Even those who were released from self-quarantine after testing negative have been re-tested positive, and unexpected community infections have surged, so we must take the situation seriously and continue to observe and track it until the end."

In this regard, the city will send messages in the mayor’s name to those who have been tested negative and placed under self-quarantine and will send letters to those who have been released from quarantine.

This is to encourage quarantined individuals so they do not feel alienated or depressed and to ask them to thoroughly manage personal hygiene even after release.

For the safety of citizens using public transportation, from the 24th, hand sanitizers will be uniformly placed on all light rail transit, taxis, and buses, and disinfection before and after operation will be carried out more thoroughly.

The city has closed all seven Shincheonji churches confirmed within the jurisdiction and disinfected the buildings they occupy. Citizens are asked to report related information about the locations of Shincheonji churches to the city hall call center (1577-1122).

Furthermore, citizens are requested to refrain from events or gatherings where many people gather and to pay more attention to personal hygiene.
