Gyeonggi-do's 'Public Construction Support Center' Officially Launches

[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province is launching the 'Gyeonggi Province Public Construction Support Center,' which will be responsible for tasks such as preliminary review of project plans and expert consultation by construction type for public construction projects worth over 100 million KRW commissioned by public institutions within the province.

Established to reduce budget costs and prevent poor construction, the 'Gyeonggi Province Public Construction Support Center' was formed in December last year following a consignment agreement with Gyeonggi Urban Innovation Corporation and is staffed by four specialists affiliated with the corporation.

The center is located near the Suwon Convention Center in Yeongtong-gu, Suwon. The center director is scheduled to be appointed next month.

The applicable institutions and projects include public construction projects worth over 100 million KRW where Gyeonggi Province subsidizes 50% or more of the construction cost. This includes institutions established by Gyeonggi Province or those invested in or endowed by the province. Recurring annual maintenance projects and emergency restoration projects related to the safety of Gyeonggi residents are excluded.

The center's main tasks include ▲ performing public construction planning tasks ▲ preliminary review of project plans ▲ ordering, planning, and managing public construction ▲ managing design plans for public construction ▲ enhancing sustainability measures such as energy efficiency in public construction ▲ supporting the calculation of design conditions and appropriate construction costs before ordering public construction ▲ providing consultation and support for public construction as recognized necessary by the governor.

The center will first conduct a pilot preliminary review of project plans by field and amount for public construction such as civil engineering and architecture in the first half of this year, then expand the project to all public institutions from the second half to carry out preliminary review and consultation tasks.

According to the 2020 demand survey, there are currently 237 public construction projects worth over 100 million KRW underway in public institutions within the province. Of these, 76 projects are subject to preliminary review of construction plans, and 161 projects are subject to consultation.

Kim Jun-tae, Director of the Urban Housing Office of Gyeonggi Province, emphasized, "The Gyeonggi Province Public Construction Support Center, the first of its kind established nationwide, is expected to reduce budgets and improve quality through integrated management of public construction projects by advising and monitoring the entire process from planning to post-management." He added, "The center will serve as the comprehensive control tower for public construction in Gyeonggi Province."
