[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] As the lockdown of Wuhan, a metropolis with a population of 11 million, due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) crisis has passed one month, Chinese authorities have held local officials in Wuhan accountable and launched a mass disciplinary action. A total of 620 Wuhan city officials have been reprimanded. With an inspection wave sweeping across Hubei Province, thousands of officials are expected to be disciplined.
According to local media such as China’s state-run CCTV, on the 22nd, the Party’s Political and Legal Affairs Commission, which oversees public security and judicial sectors, found 385 issues in Wuhan, the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak, and disciplined 620 officials by the previous day. Among those disciplined, 6 were at the director level, and 127 were at the section chief (manager) level. Conversely, 20 officials who demonstrated outstanding capabilities in responding to COVID-19 were promoted to the 'frontline advancement.'
Since Wuhan was abruptly locked down on the 23rd of last month and with the death toll in the city exceeding 1,700, public sentiment has worsened, leading to subsequent measures. In addition to Wuhan, a large-scale inspection wave is sweeping across Hubei Province, and it is expected that at least thousands of officials across Hubei, including Wuhan, will be disciplined due to the COVID-19 crisis.
