SCMP "China to Postpone Boao Forum Next Month Due to COVID-19 Impact"

[Asia Economy Reporter Son Sunhee] Due to the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), China is reportedly postponing the Boao (博鰲) Forum scheduled for next month.

On the 21st, Hong Kong media South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported this, citing multiple sources.

The Boao Forum, known as the "Davos Forum of Asia," was scheduled to be held on April 24-25 in Hainan, China. Before the full-scale spread of COVID-19, China held a press conference in Beijing on March 14 and officially announced that the event would be held with 2,000 leading figures from global political, business, and academic circles attending. In particular, there were expectations that President Xi Jinping would attend this year. However, it is now anticipated that the event will not be held as planned due to the COVID-19 situation.

SCMP also reported that the annual largest political event, the Two Sessions (National People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference), originally scheduled to open on April 5, is also expected to be postponed.

The Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, scheduled for April, was also postponed for "epidemic control and participant safety." According to the media, at least 177 exhibitions have been canceled or postponed in China since the beginning of this month. Additionally, about 260 exhibitions scheduled for next month are likely to have their dates postponed or changed.
