[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) announced on the 21st that it will make an all-out effort to prevent and contain infections at railway sites, reflecting the recent spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) mainly in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions.

KORAIL will first conduct additional disinfection whenever all trains enter the depot, in addition to the basic disinfection performed before and after train operations, and increase disinfection of stations and customer contact facilities to twice daily.

Furthermore, not only station staff who have direct contact with customers but all employees will wear masks and gloves, and temperature checks will be conducted three times a day for all staff.

Prior to this, KORAIL has been operating an emergency quarantine task force since the 20th of last month, equipping hand sanitizers and thermometers at all stations and trains nationwide, disinfecting and cleaning trains before and after operation, and disinfecting stations at least once a day along major passenger routes.

Meanwhile, KORAIL President Son Byung-seok personally visited Dongdaegu Station on the 21st to urgently inspect the on-site quarantine situation and encourage employees.

President Son said, “Railway stations are public spaces used by many citizens, so quarantine activities are very important,” and added, “KORAIL plans to switch to an all-out response system equivalent to a ‘serious’ level for COVID-19 response.”

President Son focused on inspecting the quarantine status of customer facilities such as waiting rooms, stores, and restrooms, and checked the condition of thermal cameras and hand sanitizers.
