[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has been reappointed as Chair of the General Assembly and Board of Directors of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) with the consent of its 36 member countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 21st.

The Chair presides over the GGGI General Assembly and Board of Directors and represents GGGI at major international conferences such as the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties, the UN General Assembly, and the UN Environment Assembly. The GGGI Board consists of 17 seats, including 5 private sector directors, including the Chair.

During Chair Ban's previous term, international interest and evaluation of GGGI's activities significantly increased, and eight countries joined as new members. As a result, the number of member countries grew from 28 to 36. In June 2018, GGGI obtained PIO (Public International Organization) status from USAID (United States Agency for International Development) and also received an annual A+ rating from the UK DFID (Department for International Development).

An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained, "The reappointment of former Secretary-General Ban, a symbolic figure in global climate change response such as the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is expected to contribute to securing political momentum for the stable development of GGGI and enhancing its recognition in the international community."

Meanwhile, the government, as the largest donor country to GGGI and the country holding the positions of Vice-Chair and Auditor, plans to support GGGI's growth into a prominent mid-sized international organization and closely cooperate with GGGI for the successful hosting of the 2nd P4G Summit to be held in Seoul this June.
