[Asia Economy Reporter Shinwon Yoon] Keimyung University ignored the Ministry of Education's guidelines to postpone or cancel group events such as freshman orientation and held an orientation-type event for some freshmen, sparking controversy after one student who attended was confirmed to have contracted the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
According to Keimyung University on the 21st, Keimyung Adams College (KAC), one of the colleges, held an orientation-type event for freshmen on the 18th from 2 p.m. for about two hours at Dongyoung Hall on the Seongseo Campus. It is reported that a total of 59 people attended the event, including 55 freshmen, 2 teaching assistants, and 2 staff members.
However, one of the freshmen who attended the event was included among the COVID-19 confirmed cases announced that day.
The school stated that none of the faculty and staff who attended the event at the time reported any particular symptoms, but as a precaution, all were instructed to self-quarantine.
Earlier, the Ministry of Education had repeatedly informed universities nationwide since the 30th of last month to "postpone or cancel group events such as university graduation ceremonies, entrance ceremonies, and freshman orientations (OT) as much as possible."
