[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] Veteran calligrapher Lee Su-deok (photo) passed away in the early morning of the 21st due to old age. She was 94 years old.


Born in Yeonbaek-gun, Hwanghae Province, she demonstrated outstanding talent in calligraphy and became the first female invited artist and judge at the National Art Exhibition. She was also active as an educator and social service activist.


She served as president of the Korea-China Calligraphy and Painting Revival Association, operating committee member and chairperson of the Gyeonggi Province Art Exhibition, visiting professor at Chengde Christian Academy in the Republic of China, director of the Korean Calligraphers Association, and operating committee chairperson of the 11th Korea Calligraphy Exhibition. She was also a member of the Fine Arts Division of the National Academy of Arts of Korea.


She participated in the inaugural exhibition of the China Artists Association (1979), invited artist exhibitions at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (1982?1991), the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art invitational exhibition (1991), the 100 Korean Calligraphers Exhibition commemorating the opening of the Seoul Arts Center (1991), and the Seoul Arts Invitational Exhibition (1996), among others.


She received the Gyeonggi Province Cultural Award, the Minister of Culture and Public Information Award at the National Art Exhibition, the Gyeonggi Province Women’s Award, the Taipei City Jinshan District Mayor’s Commendation, and the Order of Cultural Merit of the Republic of Korea. Her published works include "Our Calligraphy Styles," "Introduction to Haeseo Regular Script," "History of Calligraphy Figures," "Collected Writings of King Jeongjo," "Ink Collection of King Jeongjo’s Calligraphy," and "Wu Wu Im Calligraphy Dictionary."


The funeral is being held at Seoul Gangnam St. Mary’s Hospital Funeral Hall, Room 13. The funeral procession will be at 6 a.m. on the 23rd. ☎ 02-2258-5940
