Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, is having a conversation with merchants at Dunchon Station Traditional Market.
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangdong-gu (District Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) has conducted extensive disinfection and sterilization of traditional markets to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the community, while listening to the difficulties faced by merchants due to weakened consumer sentiment.
This is to block concerns about the recent spread of COVID-19 in the community and to alleviate residents' anxiety about the infectious disease. On the 19th, Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon inspected the disinfection activities at Seongnae Traditional Market and Dunchon Station Traditional Market, which were carried out in the early morning before the markets opened, encouraging merchants and listening attentively to their appeals.
Prior to this, the district distributed 2,520 masks and 105 various disinfection promotional materials to traditional markets. On the 11th, the first round of disinfection was conducted at six traditional markets together with the Saemaeul Disinfection Volunteer Corps composed of Gangdong-gu residents, responding to the spread of COVID-19.
The second round of disinfection will be carried out from the 19th to the 21st in cooperation with Cesco, a professional disinfection company in Gangdong-gu, targeting six locations: Seongnae, Dunchon Station, Gildong, Myeongil, Amsa, and Gobundari Markets, as well as heavily frequented areas such as Cheonho Rodeo Street and the Jewelry Cooperative Shopping District.
On the 21st, disinfection activities will be inspected at Amsa General Market and Gobundari Traditional Market, where Mayor Lee plans to meet with merchants. Additionally, apart from the previously distributed preventive supplies, 4,500 masks and 113 hand sanitizers will be provided.
Especially, this visit aims to vividly hear the voices of merchants who are concerned about decreased sales in traditional markets and shops due to residents' anxiety as the COVID-19 situation prolongs.
A merchant met at the market expressed difficulties, saying, "The number of visitors has decreased, and sales are also declining."
Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon visited every store without exception, offering words of comfort and urging merchants to overcome the crisis together. After touring the markets, he stopped by the traditional market merchants' association office to discuss various opinions related to COVID-19 with the merchants.
Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon said, "We will continue preventive activities to alleviate residents' anxiety and do our best to resolve the management difficulties of small business owners, including revitalizing the local economy. Our district plans to actively promote a good rent campaign, such as reducing commercial rent, and will prepare various support measures for local merchants."
In addition to traditional markets, the district is carrying out extensive disinfection activities targeting about 620 locations within the area, including welfare facilities used by vulnerable groups such as daycare centers, community child centers, and senior citizen lounges, as well as multi-use facilities with high foot traffic such as public restrooms and cultural and sports facilities, making every effort to prevent COVID-19 from entering the community.
If you experience major symptoms of the infectious disease such as fever, cough, sore throat, or difficulty breathing, please contact the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency call center (☎1339) or Gangdong-gu Public Health Center (☎3425-6713~5).
