Jongno-gu, Gwanghwamun Square Disinfection and Sanitization

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jongno-gu (District Mayor Kim Young-jong) launched special disinfection and cleaning efforts on the 20th at places with large gatherings of people, such as Gwanghwamun Square, following the occurrence of additional COVID-19 confirmed cases in the area.

Starting from 1:30 PM, four water-cleaning vehicles were deployed to thoroughly clean the Gwanghwamun Square area, followed by disinfection. Additionally, six banners urging the suspension of gatherings were installed.

This action was taken in response to growing anxiety among nearby residents due to the ongoing weekend rallies at Gwanghwamun Square combined with the spread of COVID-19 infections.

Jongno-gu conducted this water cleaning and disinfection to protect numerous tourists and citizens and to alleviate residents' concerns by responding to their requests.

The additional COVID-19 confirmed case reported on the 20th is a 74-year-old male (born in 1945) residing in Buam-dong, currently isolated at Seoul Medical Center.

Currently, Jongno-gu has temporarily closed many public facilities frequently used by residents, such as libraries, welfare centers, senior citizen centers, and sports facilities. The status of closed facilities can be checked on the district office website (www.jongno.go.kr).

Furthermore, the district has established a 24-hour emergency response system centered on the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters and is actively responding to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infections.

Continuous disinfection is being carried out at daycare centers, senior citizen centers, and multi-use facilities, and disinfection is also underway in areas with concentrated foreign student residences, such as university dormitories and one-room apartments near schools.

District Mayor Kim Young-jong stated, “We will spare no effort at the community level to alleviate residents' anxiety caused by COVID-19 and to prevent its spread within Jongno-gu.”
