[Asia Economy Reporter Han Seung-gon] As more than 40 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) have occurred solely at the Shincheonji Daegu Church, concerns have arisen that the unique worship style of this denomination may have contributed to the spread of the infection. In response, Shincheonji has issued a clarification.

On the 21st, Shincheonji posted a statement titled 'Quarantine Activities and False Reports' on its website, expressing strong dissatisfaction, saying, "Because it is Shincheonji, we have not even been granted the necessary building permits, so to maximize capacity in a small space, worshippers sit on the floor. This reality is being reported as a 'unique worship style' and labeled as the 'main cause of COVID infection.'"

Shincheonji stated, "We deeply regret once again the occurrence of numerous COVID-19 cases at the Dae-O branch Daegu Church," and emphasized, "We will actively participate in all activities including quarantine measures in accordance with government directives."

Regarding the COVID-19 situation, they said, "Facing the urgent reality of the outbreak, the Shincheonji Church of Jesus is striving to devise and implement all possible countermeasures," and urged, "Please stop distorting and defaming the Shincheonji Church of Jesus by representing the stance of established churches regardless of the essence of the incident."

They also stated, "Prevention and management of infectious diseases are directly related to the health of the people and are a very important issue connected to social anxiety caused by infection concerns. The Shincheonji Church of Jesus is ensuring thorough investigation and diagnosis according to the guidelines of health authorities, and is actively cooperating to minimize the possibility of community transmission by faithfully complying with hospitalization and self-treatment obligations based on diagnostic and epidemiological investigation results."
