[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Kia Motors' K5 won both the 2020 Car of the Year Grand Prize and Design Award, selected by the Korea Automobile Journalists Association.
The Korea Automobile Journalists Association announced on the 20th that the K5 was chosen as the grand prize winner in the final judging of Car of the Year, scoring 81.59 out of 100 points.
The Automobile Journalists Association is composed of 54 media outlets including domestic newspapers, broadcasters, communications, and specialized magazines. Its affiliated journalists conducted three rounds of evaluation targeting vehicles that sold more than 300 units among new cars and facelift models released last year.
In the final judging held on the 13th, 18 models from six brands?Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, BMW, and Porsche?competed. Candidate vehicles were evaluated based on 10 criteria: design, performance and quality, safety and convenience features, ease of operation, fuel efficiency and maintenance, vehicle price, and purchase intention.
The newly established Innovation Technology Award this year was given to Hyundai Motor's Digital Key. This connected technology links the car and smartphone, allowing vehicle access, ignition, and driving without a physical car key.
This year’s imported car award went to the BMW New 3 Series, and the SUV of the year was the BMW New X7.
The Green Car of the Year was the New Mercedes-Benz EQC, and the Performance Car of the Year was the New Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe.
Meanwhile, the Car of the Year awards ceremony was held on the afternoon of the same day at the 2nd floor convention hall of Sebitseom in Banpo. About 200 people attended the event, including government and related agency officials, representatives from domestic and imported car manufacturers, and journalists affiliated with the association.
